Hello Holt

The experience of birthing and welcoming a soul into the world is beyond explanation and description.  Words don’t deserve the responsibility of translating this miracle for human understanding.  Yet, ironically, it’s simple words like “hello”, “hi”, or “welcome” that serve the honor of meeting your child for the first time.

“Hello, Holt Fisher Smith,” I said on July 1st as I held him in my arms for the first time.  And just like I did with my daughter, Harper, I began studying every part of him – the simple sweet parts like his blue eyes, the wispy blondish hair, his pursed little lips, his delicate ears, his nose…indeed every simple, but breathtakingly majestic part of what my husband and I created.

While staring at him, my mind began to race toward the future with questions like, “What will he be one day? What will he like? Will he be happy? Will he be 6’4″ tall or 5’5″ not so tall? Will he and his sister be close?” I stopped myself.  There’s plenty of time for all of those questions. For now, I just wanted to look at every inch of this beautiful, wonderful boy.

I am reminded of the Louis Armstrong song, “What a Wonderful World” and its simple yet powerful lyrics:

I see trees of green, red roses, too,
I see them bloom, for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue, and clouds of white,
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky,
Are also on the faces of people going by.
I see friends shaking hands, sayin’, “How do you do?”
They’re really sayin’, “I love you.”

I hear babies cryin’. I watch them grow.
They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world

These simple lyrics about clouds, skies, rainbows and babies crying create powerful and beautiful imagery for the listener.  And so I feel quite confident that a simple “hello” and “welcome” were sufficient and loving when I welcomed my son, Holt, into this wonderful world.

Tiffani,
Clearly you speak from the heart and the love for your children is so very pure. The values in the lyrics reflect the kind of world we can have when parents- like you you- will take that time to show their children that wonderful has many definitions – you just have to open your eyes.
